AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) Format & Logistics: What to Expect on Test Day

The format at a glance

You get 65 questions and 90 minutes. Only 50 of those questions are scored — the other 15 are unscored pretest items AWS is trialing for future exams. They're mixed in randomly and look identical to the real ones, so treat every question as if it counts.

There are two question types:

Multiple choice → one correct answer out of four options. Multiple response → pick two or more correct answers from a longer list; the question tells you how many.

A few things shape how you work through it. There's no penalty for guessing, so never leave a blank — an unanswered question scores the same as a wrong one, and a best guess can only help. No calculator is provided, and none is needed; this is a conceptual exam rather than a numeric one. Pace yourself at a little under 90 seconds a question: flag the hard ones, keep moving, and circle back with your remaining time instead of stalling. Keep the scope in mind too — coding, complex architecture design, troubleshooting, implementation, and load testing are all excluded, so if a question seems to demand hands-on engineering, you're overthinking it.

You pass at 700 on a 100–1,000 scale. That score is set by AWS and is the same for every candidate — there's no curve.

What test day looks like

You choose your delivery method when you book. At a Pearson VUE test center, you arrive early with valid ID, store your belongings, and take the exam on a provided workstation under in-person supervision — predictable and distraction-free. If you sit it online with a remote proctor, you take it from home or the office, and you'll need a quiet, private room, a clear desk, a webcam, and a stable internet connection. The proctor checks your ID and scans the room before you start, then monitors you throughout, so no phone, no notes, and no one else in the room.

The exam costs 100 USD. Because it's foundational and requires no coding, it's the most accessible AWS certification and a common entry point for people in sales, marketing, and management roles as well as IT. When you finish, you'll typically see a provisional pass/fail on screen, with the official scored result and any domain breakdown following by email.
