CAPM Certification Format & Logistics: What to Expect on Test Day

In short

The CAPM exam is 150 questions in 3 hours, and only 135 of them count — the other 15 are unscored pretest items. You sit it as computer-based testing, either at a test center or under online proctoring. A 10-minute break opens after question 75, and once you take it the first half locks behind you.

The format at a glance

Of the 150 questions, exactly 135 are scored. The other 15 are unscored pretest items, scattered at random; they are being trialed for future exams and do not count. Nothing on screen tells you which fifteen, so answer everything — 90% of what you touch is scored.

Three hours across 150 questions comes to 1 minute 12 seconds each. That average matters because the exam is cut in half at question 75 — even pacing puts you there at the 90-minute mark. Arrive at question 75 with two hours gone and the remaining 75 questions have 48 seconds each.

Four question formats appear: multiple-choice, drag-and-drop enhanced matching, animations and comic strips, and hot spot or hot area items. Hot spot items are point-and-click. The illustrated ones present a scenario as a comic strip or a short animation, so part of the task is reading a situation off a picture.

The testing software has a calculator built in, and personal calculators are not permitted on either route. Predictive, plan-based work asks you to compute schedule variance and identify a critical path. Run that arithmetic on screen while you still have sessions to spare.

Here is the whole of it on one screen:

The exam draws on four domains, and they are a long way from even. The share column is the exam's own weighting; the last two columns are our study plan, not PMI's.

DomainShare of the examShare × 135 scoredOur topicsOur study hours
Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts36%~491025
Business Analysis Frameworks27%~36720
Agile Frameworks/Methodologies20%27615
Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies17%~23612

The third column is those shares applied to the 135 scored questions — 36% of 135 is 48.6, and 20% of 135 is exactly 27. Treat it as the paper's shape, give or take a question.

There is no published passing score

PMI does not publish a numerical cutoff, and that changes how you plan. Scoring runs through a psychometric scaled model, and your result arrives as a performance category — Above Target, Target and so on. The standard is the same for every candidate.

So you cannot convert a pass mark into a budget of allowed misses and spend it, the way you can on a percentage-scored exam. What you can work from is the shares above. Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts is 36% of the exam, more than twice the predictive domain's 17%.

What test day looks like

Your delivery choice changes what appears on screen. The exam runs as computer-based testing, either at a test center or via online proctoring. Under online proctoring the illustrated scenarios arrive as comic strips only; the animated ones do not appear. So if you have been practicing on animated scenarios and then book online proctoring, what you meet on the day will be stills.

The fee is 225forPMImembersand225 for PMI members and 300 for everyone else — a $75 gap, so price out membership before you book.

There is an optional tutorial and a survey, 5 to 15 minutes between them, and that time sits outside your 3 hours.

The break is one-way

Ten minutes become available once you have worked through questions 1 to 75 and reviewed your answers. The moment the break starts, the first half locks — you cannot return to those 75 questions. So the order matters:

Work through questions 1 to 75 →
go back over your answers while you still can →
then take the break.

Our CAPM guide covers 29 topics across the four domains, and Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts is the heaviest at 36% of the exam. Three things inside it are worth being able to answer cold:

Common questions

How many questions are on the CAPM exam? 150, of which 135 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest items.

How long do I get? 3 hours for the exam itself. The optional tutorial and the end-of-exam survey take 5 to 15 minutes and sit outside that.

What is the passing score? PMI does not publish one. Scoring uses a psychometric scaled model, and your result comes back as a performance category such as Above Target or Target. The standard is the same for every candidate.

Can I bring my own calculator? No — the testing software has one built in, and that is the only calculator you get.

Does CAPM only cover waterfall project management? No. Predictive, plan-based methodologies are 17% of the exam. Agile Frameworks are 20% and Business Analysis Frameworks 27%, which is 47% between them.

Is there a break? Yes, 10 minutes after question 75, and once it begins you cannot return to the first half.

How long should I study? Our CAPM plan allots 72 hours: 25 for Fundamentals, 20 for Business Analysis, 15 for Agile and 12 for Predictive.
