Manage Conflicts: Resolution and Ground Rules

In any complex system with moving parts, friction is an absolute certainty. In mechanical engineering, uncontrolled friction wears down gears and causes engines to seize; in project management, this friction manifests as conflict between human beings managing scarce resources against unyielding deadlines. Yet, just as tires require friction to grip the road and propel a vehicle forward, a project requires the friction of diverse perspectives to innovate and solve complex problems. Conflict is an inevitable consequence of organizational interactions. The hallmark of a masterful project manager is not the ability to eliminate conflict, but the capacity to architect an environment where it serves as a catalyst. When correctly harnessed, constructive conflict can lead to better decision-making and innovation within a project team.
