Science for the ATI TEAS 7: What You Actually Need to Know

In short

Science is the biggest section on the TEAS — 29% of your score, across 12 topic areas and about 20 hours of prep. Most of it is Human Anatomy and Physiology, so that's where your time goes. Learn the body's organizing framework first, then the major systems, and the questions get a lot more predictable.

The big ideas

Almost everything in TEAS science rests on anatomy and physiology. If you know how the body is built and how its parts keep each other in balance, most questions answer themselves.

Start with the vocabulary of position. Anatomy uses a fixed reference pose — standing, facing forward, palms out — so that "left" and "right" always mean the same thing no matter how a patient is lying.

From there, directional terms (superior, distal, medial) describe where one structure sits relative to another, and three planes slice the body into standard views. These aren't trivia — they're the language every other question is written in.

Next come the body systems. You don't need every detail, but you do need the job each system does and how they connect — the respiratory and cardiovascular systems moving oxygen, the digestive and urinary systems handling intake and waste, the nervous and endocrine systems sending signals.

The physiology thread that ties it together is homeostasis: the body holding a steady internal state through feedback. Most control is negative feedback — a change triggers a response that reverses it, like sweating to cool down. A few processes use positive feedback, where a change amplifies itself until an endpoint.

Get those four ideas — position, systems, and the two kinds of feedback — and you've got the spine of the whole section.

How it shows up on the exam

Science is 29% of the TEAS, the largest single section, and Human Anatomy and Physiology is the most heavily tested part of it. That's why 20 hours of prep is a fair budget, and why anatomy and physiology deserve the majority of it.

Expect questions that name a structure and ask its function, or describe a process and ask which system runs it. Because it's the highest-weighted content, a strong science score does the most to lift your overall result — so if you're short on time, this is the section to protect.
